Montes
The story of Montes seems like a dream and, truthfully, that's how it began, becoming progressively reality.

It was in 1987 when our two visionaries partners, Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, with extensive experience in the world of wine, wanted to realize their dreams of producing wines of a quality far superior to the one that was being produced in Chile at that time. They added in 1988 the other two original partners, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, each making their special and complementary contribution, thus giving birth to Viña Montes, called in the beginning DiscoverWine Ltda. A dream come true, of four great visionaries, who have achieved over time, Montes and Montes Alpha wines will reach more than a hundred countries, be recognized for their extraordinary and permanent quality and, at the same time, attract the attention of the entire world about the wines that Chile can produce.

SUSTAINABLE EFFORTS
INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT
We have been using these management techniques in 100% of our vineyards since the year 2000. This includes the constant recording and monitoring of pests, diseases, natural enemies, and nutritional and water requirements to ensure the sustainable use of pesticides, fertilizers, and water.

MAINTAINING PLANT COVER
Sixty percent of our vineyards retain a natural plant cover between the rows to decrease problems with erosion and soil compaction. This also encourages the proliferation of natural enemies of the pests that affect viticultural production. A new study is conducted every two years to analyze the condition of the nutrients in the soil.

LESS WATER USE
All of our vineyards are drip irrigated and highly efficient in their water use. After years of studies and using the latest technology we have decreased water consumption by 25% in Marchigüe and 10% in Apalta—Dry Farming method—a savings equivalent to the amount of water used by 3,200 families each year.

COMPOSTING
We make compost from the pomace (grape skins and seeds) produced during the harvest season and apply it in the vineyards to improve soil structure and reduce the use of inorganic fertilizers by 30%.

USE OF GRAZING ANIMALS
We have been using grazing animals—llamas and sheep—in our Marchigüe vineyards since 2010 to reduce the weeds in the vineyard. By 2013 there were 350 animals controlling 200 hectares of vineyards, which results in a 40% savings in the used of herbicides during the winter.
