Houghton
A Rich History
Western Australian Wine
Three British Army officers (Thomas Yule, Ninian Lowis and Richmond Houghton) established Houghton in 1836, just four years after the fledgling colony of Western Australia was founded. We are named after Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton. Our first commercial vintage, produced by Dr John Ferguson in 1859, was a modest 25 gallons. John Ferguson, a Scottish surgeon, purchased the property that year and was winemaker until 1863
"Houghton is Australia’s third-oldest operating winery, established in 1836
In the past three decades alone, Houghton wines have won over 250 trophies and 4,700 medals at domestic and international wine shows and become the most awarded winery in Western Australia."

Our Wines
The reason Houghton is Western Australia’s most awarded winery has everything to do with the people behind the wines. Home to only 14 winemakers in its entire 180-year history, the Houghtonwines are crafted with care, forethought and their loyal drinkers in mind.
